The opera and the ball

Nowhere is protocol more explicit than in Vienna: the balls publish their dress code to the word, and the opera houses their regulations. What follows is not style advice; it is the rulebook.

What the institutions publish

Each rule is taken from the document published by the institution, consulted at its official address on 27/08/2026.

Custom, according to the house

One arrives before the doors close: the opera house knows nothing of the fashionably late. One applauds neither between movements nor during a conductor's silence. At a ball, one does not cross the floor during a quadrille, and the opening curtsey belongs to the debutantes: one watches it, one does not mimic it.
