The private members' club
A private club is a house whose rules are a contract: the House Rules are published, accepted upon entry, enforced without exception. They all say the same thing: what happens at the club stays at the club.
What the institutions publish
- Soho House. Any photography or filming, including with a telephone, is forbidden inside the Houses of Soho House.
- Soho House. A member, limited to three guests, may neither part from them inside the club nor leave them there after departing.
- Casa Cipriani New York. After 18:00, members and guests are asked to keep their telephones on silent and to refrain from making calls or using a laptop, with text messages remaining permitted and calls possible in the club's designated areas.
- Casa Cipriani New York. Those under 21 are not admitted to the club, except at weekend brunch, accompanied by a member in the designated areas.
- The Arts Club. Laptops, telephones, tablets and work papers are tolerated only until 17:00, and never in the dining rooms or in the Oscuro.
- Debrett's. One never tips a club's staff: to reward them, there is generally a common fund called the Holiday Box, whose contributions are shared among all employees.

Custom, according to the house
One never asks who was there. One does not introduce oneself to a public figure: one waits for a member to make the introductions. One addresses the staff by name and with consideration. Being a guest is not being a member: one follows, one does not lead.
