What is morning dress?

Morning dress, la jaquette in French, is the most formal daytime ceremonial attire in the men's wardrobe: a long tailed coat worn with a waistcoat and top hat. It is the code required of gentlemen in the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot.

Morning dress is to the daytime what black tie and white tie are to the evening: the most formal degree. It is not to be confused with the black tie dinner jacket or the white tie tailcoat; it is their daytime equivalent, reserved for ceremonies and the races. Its most codified territory is the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot, June 15 to 19, 2027, where the formal dress code requires morning dress and a hat. The rules published by Ascot are precise: a black, grey or navy morning coat; a black or grey top hat is mandatory, and may only be removed in a restaurant, a private box, an enclosed outdoor seating area, a terrace, a balcony or a garden; any customization of the top hat (colored ribbons, feathers, ornaments) is prohibited. Ladies answer to the same degree of formality: a hat is mandatory, and a headpiece is only accepted if its base measures at least 10 cm in diameter. One last reminder: the Royal Enclosure cannot be bought. Entry comes through sponsorship by two members who have been affiliated for at least five years, a signed application and a £100 fee, with badges bookable from January 2027. Morning dress is the customary condition, not the pass.
