Royal Ascot, from 15 to 19 June 2027, illustrates the system: four enclosures, four worlds. The Windsor Enclosure (from £25) is the most affordable, with no formal dress code and picnics allowed. The Village Enclosure, the "festival" enclosure with an after-party, shows tickets spotted at around £45 to £100 depending on the day. The Queen Anne Enclosure (from £80, tickets spotted at around £85 to £125) already applies a dress code. The Royal Enclosure, finally, is not for sale: you must be sponsored by two members of at least five years' standing who know the candidate personally, and submit a signed Member Application Form, together with a £100 fee, before mid-May (processing takes up to three weeks, badges bookable from January). Without sponsorship, a table at a Royal Enclosure restaurant (Panoramic, Parade Ring) grants access. Dress follows the hierarchy: hats mandatory for ladies in the Royal Enclosure (headpieces accepted from a 10 cm base), straps at least 2.5 cm wide, morning coat and top hat for gentlemen. The principle extends beyond racing: in the Stewards' Enclosure at the Henley regatta, hemlines fall below the knee and you step outside the enclosure to take a phone call.
