Before the sale, the public exhibition is free and open to all: anyone can come see the works, bearing in mind that handling an object on display in the house's premises is done at the visitor's own risk. Come evening, the room is reserved for registered bidders: for "Modernités," registration is on sothebys.com or through the Sotheby's Paris switchboard. The usages of the auction world fully apply: the houses ask you to register in advance (at least 24 hours before the sale at Christie's), bidding generally opens below the low estimate and advances in increments that can reach 10 percent at the auctioneer's discretion, a bid once placed is irrevocable, and the lot is invoiced in the name under which the paddle was registered.
